Causes of Neck Pain

In many cases, neck pain is caused by muscle strain or tension. At Frisco Spine, we can determine if this is the source of your pain, or if there is an underlying medical condition which can be pointed to. Muscle strain itself can be caused by any number of things, including daily activities. Improper placement of a computer monitor, poor posture while seated, sleeping with the neck strained or unsupported, twisting the neck, and exercise can all cause muscle tension. Additionally, trauma can result in neck injury. Falls, car accidents, and blunt force can result in vertebral fractures, compression fractures, whiplash, and blood vessel injury.

While simple muscle tension can usually be treated non-surgically, through the simple application of physical therapy and muscle relaxers, neck pain that derives from medical conditions may require more comprehensive care. At Frisco Spine, we can treat neck pain that stems from:

  • Arthritis (Facet Arthropathy) – Facet joints exist between each vertebrae of the spine. Through wear and tear or trauma, the facet joints can become inflamed or begin to deteriorate.
  • Disc Herniation – This condition occurs when the soft nucleus pulposus of the spine bulges out through a tear in the outer ring of the intervertebral disc.
  • Subluxation – A subluxation is the presence of an incomplete or dislocated joint. In spinal subluxation, the spinal nerve roots can be impinged.
  • Spondylosis – This condition, which results from degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the vertebrae and neural foraminae, places pressure on the spinal nerves.
  • Bone Spurs (Ostephytes) – Any abnormal bony growth – a bone spur – can cause pain through increased pressure on surrounding bone and muscle tissue.
  • Cervical Stenosis – If bone spurs occur on the spine, through natural degenerative changes, they can shrink the size of the spinal canal and place pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Foraminal Stenosis – A narrowing of the foraminal canal at the base of the spine, through bone spurs, arthritis, or bulging discs, can constrict the nerve roots.

Neck pain can also occur as a result of ruptured discs, small spinal fractures, osteoporosis, spinal infection, and fibromyalgia. If you are suffering from a medical condition which is causing you neck pain, you should seek treatment. If left untreated, pain will likely persist, and some conditions can worsen over time.

Considerations

Neck pain can make it difficult to move your head side-to-side. If neck pain is caused by a pinched nerve, individuals may also experience numbness, tingling, and weakness in the extremities. If you experience these symptoms, it is possible that your neck pain is the result of a pinched nerve rather than simple muscle tension. Being mindful of what may be the root of the pain can help you make informed decisions as to whether you should seek treatment. If you believe that your neck pain stems from simple muscle tension, over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may suffice to relieve you of your pain; if the neck pain is caused by pinched nerves or a medical condition, you should seek treatment.
